When Luke Hogue of Arrowhead Middle School heard there was a policy debate being held for Kansas City, KS high school students, he immediately wanted in. So it’s not surprising but wholly impressive that this sixth grade boy was able to take 3rd place amongst all competitors at the Wyandotte County Youth Policy Debates. Developed by state Senator David Hayley, D-4th District they took place May 12th at the Performing Arts Center on the Kansas City Kansas Community College campus.
A number of Arrowhead Middle students have been competing in DEBATE-Kansas City’s policy debate program all year, some for the past two years, and the experience provided young Luke with the confidence and desire to compete against upperclassmen. When ask about the experience Luke said “The topics at Senator Haley’s debate made me look at issues from different sides. I had a lot of fun competing against high school students and having a chance to win money was even better”.
Luke has demonstrated time and again this year that he is a young man to be reckoned with when it comes to debate. He was the third best overall student congress competitor in the DKC middle school division. However at this event Luke had the opportunity to demonstrate his debate prowess in front of a VIP audience. As he explains “It was fun to have adults in the audience listening to us. Ms. Willis, our School Board President was there cheering us on. It was cool to have grown-ups listening to us for a change.”
DKC is proud of Luke and his accomplishment he proves that in debate it doesn’t matter how old or strong you are. What matters is how good your argument is. We look forward to seeing many good arguments from Luke in the coming years.
